CHILD CARE

Emergency First Response "Child Care" Course

The Emergency First Response "Child Care" course is an innovative CPR, AED, and first aid course that teaches participants how to provide emergency care to injured or ill children (ages one to eight) and infants (under one year old). Participants learn about the types of emergencies children may experience and how they differ from adult medical conditions. The course program also covers the need to manage basic emergency situations involving children, the emotional aspects of child care, secondary care for children, and how to prevent common childhood injuries and illnesses.

The Emergency First Response "Child Care" course trains non-medical responders to follow the same care priorities used by medical professionals. Students learn the priorities and master the procedures for providing care to infants and children in a stress-free learning environment. This approach helps reduce students' anxiety about their skills, ensuring they learn effectively. In real emergencies, their increased confidence allows them to act decisively.

The course includes primary (CPR) and secondary (first aid) care techniques. The primary care portion prepares rescuers to assist an infant or child facing a life-threatening emergency, such as choking or cardiac arrest. The secondary care portion focuses on developing skills for assessing and treating non-life-threatening injuries, reinforcing confidence in providing first aid when emergency medical services are delayed or unavailable. The "Child Care" course content follows the pediatric guidelines of the "ILCOR" group.
